Luton - Cumberland
The consented development is at a significant location close to the student quarter in Luton, it is also at a key location along the main ring road – adjacent to the elevated Viaduct. Therefore the proposed scheme had to integrate with the town in different ways, along Cumberland Street the scheme is addressed in a lower scale – whilst adjacent to the elevated Viaduct the scheme could former a stronger statement and scale increased.
The consented development is for 248 student rooms, 104 keyworker rooms and retail units – the design is split into 2 main blocks ‘student’ and ‘key worker’, but connected at the lower floors with a splayed courtyard to allow for integration of all occupiers within the hard landscaped garden courtyard area.
The retail to the lower ground floor areas with provide excellent animation to Cumberland Street, all units have been designed to be dual aspect so each unit benefits from street and courtyard animation.
